A tufa tower developing underwater at the source of a freshwater spring under Mono Lake, California, USA. The riffling on the water's surface is fresh water bubbling up through the lake's mineral-rich water. A chemical reaction occurs forming calcium carbonate (limestone) which is deposited around the mouth of the spring, over time forming a tall, hollow column, known as a tufa tower.
