Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus), female, red-shafted race, landing at its nest hole in Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) trunk, Mono Lake Basin, California, USA. (Note the red shafts of the wing and tail feathers that give this Flicker race its name.)
